Light sprinkling of rain and gray overhead. That didnt stop 35 hardy C&F members from turning up to join my Remembrance Ride down to East Grinstead. Hot Tea, Coffee and snacks, kindly laid on as per usual by Warrs, went down well as many took the opportunity to grab a hot drink before the briefing given sharp at 10.40. Afterwards the Chapter honoured the 11am silence and then mounted up and headed off west down the Kings Road. Through Putney onto the A3 then a left turn at Tolworth towards Epsom and Ewell. Picking up the A217 briefly we then took a country lane diversion through Kingswood, Chipstead and on to Old Coulsdon. Shortly after we took a breather to re-gather, rather fittingly, at RAF Kenley which was of course one of the key fighter Airfields during and after the Battle of Britain. The group had so far stayed remarkably tight and so it wasnt long before we resumed our ride and headed out into proper country road territory from Woldingham to Cowden. Two and a half hours after leaving Warr's we arrived at the car park of the Dorset Arms in the historic High Street. Wed been asked by the Landlord to make as much noise as possible when we arrived (there is a small tunnel at the entrance to the car park) so how could we refuse? Tunnels and loud exhausts were of course made for each other! Bikes parked we quickly all walked over to the Sir Archibald McIndoe memorial outside Sackville College, just over the road from the pub. Road Captain and ex Para Ray Campbell laid our wreath, the RCs read the Ode of Remembrance and the Chapter duly observed a minutes silence. Ours was the only wreath placed there as no doubt the main High Street memorial deservedly gets more attention at this time, so it felt right and fitting to visit this little known memorial and to show our respect. Back over to the pub and refreshments. Unfortunately the kitchens werent the fastest in the west but nevertheless in good C&F spirit everyone settled in to talk about the ride, bikes, life and a good few of us no doubt gave a passing thought to just how lucky we are to be able to ride our bikes and enjoy ourselves as and when we like. Lest we forget. Big thanks to Road Captains DOF, Ray, Nigel, Wiggs, Johnners, Fred, Steve, and most importantly last man Andrew. By law, this means you can ride any motorcycle with a maximum of 35kw power. This licence will see you restricted for two years or until you turn 24 years old when you can take another test. Harley-Davidson do not produce a dedicated 35kw machine, they have however been very mindful of this large European licence class when developing the new to range Nightster 975. The 2022 Nightster is the replacement for Harleys long standing 883, a motorcycle which has been many riders first taste of the brand, sparking a life long relationship with the dream that is Harley-Davidson Built from the ground up the new Nightster has received a serious amount of R&D to make it capable on so many levels. First impressions are that it ticks all the boxes for the target markets. The Nightster name is not new to Harley-Davidson having first appeared in 2007 as a bobber style Sportster with a production run of some 5 years. The new Nightster maintains heritage well, and at first glance is so clearly a Harley. The purest will be asking about the new Revolution Max engine, it is a brand-new power plant that brings technology right up to date, variable inlet valves, water cooled and a whole host of electronic trickery. As this motorcycle is well and truly aimed at new Harley riders though they do not need to compare it to a Panhead or Evo. Mainly they need to know that their bike is fitted with the most modern, efficient and best performing V twin available on the market today. Restriction is carried out electronically at the dealership on the Nightster, this offers the very best results as you maintain full throttle movement and feel. Restricting a more powerful motorcycle as your first ride is a great idea, the components fitted to a more high-end bike as standard tend to be of better quality and superior performance. Giving you a better riding experience and helping you to develop as a rider. Certainly, this is the case with Nightster, with features including ABS, Traction control and 3 dedicated rider modes: Road, Rain & Sport. Of course, you also have looks and image to think about, no one is going to know you are riding a 35kw motorcycle. Theres no plates or signs saying 35kw, as far as the motorcycle community knows your riding one of the newest Harleys on the street, a proper all grown up motorcycle. Lets fast forward two years, yes that day has come and you are now a fully fledged motorcyclist. No restrictions or limits your free to ride whatever you want. You have booked your Nightster in to be put to full power, and as if by magic another 31kw of power are on tap, taking you to 66kw and an amazing 95Nm of torque. Its a whole new bike, however you know how it rides and handles, best of all though you didnt lose any money part exchanging it in for an upgraded model. Hows the 35Kw Nightster ride? With the very low centre of gravity and neutral geometry, riding was always going to be easy on this new bike. Thats exactly how Harley designed it. The power reduction is pretty negligible at first, in fact if it was your first big bike you really wouldnt know any different. The top end power is where the restriction comes into play, just shaving the edge of the higher revs. If you short shift up the gears you still make good progress and there is no restriction on the speed at all. A new rider is going to feel nothing but confidence on this motorcycle, the handling, braking, ride and looks are just superb. The youngest of three children born to army Captain Frederick James and his wife Margaret. Husband and wife ran a motorcycle dealership and general vehicle repair shop on Londons Kings Road. Fred left school aged 14. His first job was as a messenger boy in Harrods. In 1947 he joined the Royal Air Force. By then he was also an avid motorcyclist and had already developed what would become a lifelong passion for Harley-Davidson. His father had been an official Harley dealer since the 1920s and Fred had clearly inherited his enthusiasm for the American built V-Twins. By the late 1940s Fred was working with his father at Kings Road repairing and selling ex-military WL750 Harleys which at the time were being sold off at Government auctions. Fred would buy in bulk and then civilianise the bikes with colourful paint jobs to attract the buying public who were looking for anything other than wartime khaki. Due to post war trade restrictions new Harley-Davidsons were not available. In 1949 Fred became a founding member of the Harley-Davidson Riders Club of Great Britain. As well as cultivating an active riding and social scene for members the club also ran many Rallies and Gymkhanas. Several overseas trips took place too and a popular excursion was to travel to the continent by air with your motorcycle from Lydd to Le Touquet on an ex-wartime transporter, roll on roll off. By the early 1950s Fred had decided to specialise exclusively in the Harley brand. He knew that if the family business was to flourish, he would need to be able to sell both new and used Harleys. In rationed post war Britain government restrictions meant new motorcycle imports were not allowed. Nevertheless, Fred saved the boat fare and travelled to Milwaukee USA where he met with founders son William H. Davidson. The relationship between manufacturer and dealer was reaffirmed and after much lobbying of HM government and the US senate Fred was finally granted a restricted import license. In 1956 the first new civilian Harley-Davidsons into the UK since before the war arrived at the Warrs Kings Road dealership. Fred married Margaret Ann Humphries Rita in 1955 at the Church of our Lady, Lisson Grove, Marylebone and their first child Patricia was born in 1957. By 1960, Fred had become the official UK Concessionaire for all things Harley-Davidson. 1960s London was in full swing and his Harley dealership on the now fashionable Kings Road was the place to be. The American brand has always attracted a diverse clientele and any Saturday afternoon at Warrs would often see wannabees, rockers and rock stars alike chilling and talking bikes. Film makers too, keen for some Americana in their productions, would often hire Fred to populate their latest movie with Harleys. Fred stood in for many film riding roles and in the cult classic Girl on a Motorcycle numerous riding shots showing Jaggers then girlfriend Marianne Faithfull racing along on her Harley are actually Fred in tight white leathers and a long blonde wig! Fred was also a very accomplished rider and racer. He trialled and raced various Harleys throughout the 50s and 60s. In 1974 he won the prestigious RAC National Rally and later that decade twice took part in the infamous Circuit des Pyrenees in France. His chosen mount one year being a very non-race bike Police issue Harley Electra Glide, nicknamed by the astonished local French press Le Dinosaur. Fred rode the wheels off the bike, running out of brakes on the mad mountainous descents as the early disc brakes would overheat and fail to stop the beast. Nevertheless, using engine braking and his considerable riding skill he bought the bike into a very credible top ten finish. As well as being a promotor of all things Harley-Davidson Fred was known for his mechanical expertise and astonishing knowledge of the inner workings of the cult V-Twin motors used by the brand. In the early 1970s Fred worked alongside the Harley-Davidson factory race team on preparation of the winning Trans-Atlantic match race bikes for H-D factory rider Cal Rayborn, often referred to at the time as the worlds greatest road racer. In 1976 Fred was also involved in machine preparation for the famous stunt jump by Harley riding Evel Knievel over 13 London buses at Wembley Stadium. In 1986, not long after his wife Rita passed away, Fred semi-retired from the bike business. Freds love of biking continued its hold however and he later went on to ride the length of Britain for charity on a vintage 1916 Harley and later also took part in the Mille Miglia endurance rally through Italy on a wartime WL750, painted khaki. By his mid 70s Fred had been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) but his determined attitude saw him travel to China for radical treatments which he insisted had curtailed the spread of the disease and allowed him many more years than the usual cruelly short prognosis. Though his leathers had long been hung up he spent the latter years of his life re-kindling his earlier passion for building, restoring and supplying parts and much knowledge for vintage Harleys and their owners. Fred is survived by daughters Patricia and Theresa and two sons John and Robert. Freds youngest son William was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident in 2003. Fred passed away peacefully at home on the 11thof August and will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony. No flowers please, instead please consider a donation toMND.
